Experienced Chess Teacher

Chess has been shown to increase academic achievement and social skills. I can teach both children and adults with a range of skills and abilities. I will tailor each lesson around the individual needs of students. Students will come away with a strong understanding of the fundamentals of chess along with how to apply the skill sets learned from the game to their own lives.

Excellent with children!
John has recently started tutoring our 7 year old daughter in chess and she is enjoying her lessons and picking up skills quickly. I was impressed with his background when looking for a tutor and like John's approach with children. He is very patient and encourages them to think things through and come up with the right moves. We are looking forward to her competing in tournaments this fall and believe she will be greatly helped by his teaching.

Learning to see themes and patterns

John is a wonderful chess instructor. He doesn't focus on rote memorization, but on themes that arise throughout the game. He's adept at teaching to requests, but also at bringing relevant problems and games to review. I've found his instruction incredibly helpful in developing my gameplay.

“You sit at the board and suddenly your heart leaps. Your hand trembles to pick up the piece and move it. But what chess teaches you is that you must sit there calmly and think about whether it’s really a good idea and whether there are other, better ideas.” -Stanley Kubrick, Filmmaker, Producer
